Biography

Born in 1981, Ross Muir grew up in Alexandria, Scotland, before relocating to Glasgow in 2009. At the age of 30, Muir discovered his passion for painting, sparked by a gift of paints. Seeking comfort and expression in art, his natural talent and inventive creativity quickly emerged, prompting him to pursue a full-time artistic career.

Known for his witty reinterpretations of iconic historical paintings, Muir is a shape-shifter in both genre and style. Drawing inspiration from artists like Basquiat, Magritte, Rousseau, and Picasso, Muir doesn’t just replicate their techniques—he embodies their spirit, adding his own modern twist. His breakthrough came in 2018 with Square Gogh, a contemporary take on the Dutch Impressionist Vincent van Gogh, which quickly went viral on social media and caught the attention of galleries and institutions.

In October 2019, Muir held his first solo exhibition in Glasgow’s city centre, a resounding success that sold out before the opening.

In December 2020, the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands shared Muir's work on their Instagram to announce the temporary closure of the gallery, further solidifying his reach.

In 2021, Muir became represented by Maddox Gallery, and in May 2022, he debuted his first solo show in London, titled 23: A Brush with Redemption. The exhibition was another success, selling out, and was followed by another sell-out show, cementing his reputation. His work continues to be exhibited and collected, with pieces now held in prestigious public institutions like Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery and Turner Contemporary.
