Daniel Arsham, born September 8, 1980 is a multidisciplinary American visual artist known for his sculptural work, architectural interventions, and collaborations. He explores themes of time, memory, and the ephemeral nature of everyday objects, often presenting them in a simulated state of decay or future relic.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in Miami, Florida, Arsham experienced the impact of Hurricane Andrew as a child. He developed an interest in art and mathematics, attending the Design and Architecture High School. He earned a full scholarship to The Cooper Union in New York City, where he studied art and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Arsham began his career with collaborations with Merce Cunningham, designing stage sets for his performances, which led to touring with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
In 2007, he co-founded Snarkitecture with Alex Mustonen, an architecture collaborative that combines sculpture and architecture.
His sculptural work often features casts of everyday objects, such as soft toys, basketballs, and clothing, in materials like volcanic ash and pyrite.
Arsham also creates architectural interventions, altering spaces and playing with the perception of materiality.
Arsham has collaborated with fashion brands like Adidas and Dior, and he has also created a shoe collection for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
